Thomas J. Main – Partner
Tom Main is a Partner of Oliver Wyman (formerly ChapterHouse), a strategy
and organization consulting firm specializing in the healthcare industry.
Tom has worked in all major segments of healthcare from payers to hospitals and physicians to medical suppliers. His work has focused on strategy formulation, product/service innovation, and portfolio analysis and growth for Board and Executive levels of large, well-positioned organizations. Tom also remains active with a series of pre-IPO companies advising on strategy and helping the leadership teams gain access to competitive market segments.

Mark Luck Olson – Managing Partner
Mark Luck Olson, a Partner of Oliver Wyman (formerly ChapterHouse), is a strategy consultant specializing in accelerating performance and top line growth across all segments of the healthcare industry. He has particular expertise in strategy formulation, market analysis and segmentation, market development, and sales force effectiveness. 
The majority of Mark’s twenty years experience in healthcare has been as a company insider, both in corporate and field roles. Five years were spent as head of information technology for Baxter Healthcare’s $2 billion global biotechnology business, and another two years as CIO of $250 million Lab Safety Supply.
At Oliver Wyman, Mark has led multiple strategy and market development engagements with payers, benefit administrators, network companies, providers, suppliers, and services companies, at both corporate and field levels.
Mark is a market-oriented thinker who enjoys partnering with company leaders committed to unleashing the real growth potential of their organization.
Mark is an alumnus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received both his undergraduate degree and MBA from MIT.
Michael J. Main – Partner
Michael Main, an Oliver Wyman Health and Life Sciences Partner, brings comprehensive strategy development and implementation experience as well as sales and marketing acumen to the healthcare vertical. His expertise in applied and innovative strategy, revenue acceleration, and corporate development has helped organizations across the healthcare industry—from payers and providers to pharmaceutical and technology achieve their performance objectives. Oliver Wyman engagements have involved everyone from board members to functional leaders by balancing strategy development with the realities of the market and organizational readiness.
Michael is a nationally recognized speaker and author. He has presented keynote addresses at numerous industry and client forums and has published a variety of healthcare articles in leading trade journals. His ability to weave captivating story telling with sharp industry perspective has helped a broad array of audiences expand their knowledge and thinking.
Michael joined Oliver Wyman (formerly ChapterHouse, LLC) in 1999. He has over twenty-five years of healthcare experience. He honed his leadership, management, sales, and marketing skills while responsible for revenue and margin performance for a national insurance carrier. Since then, Michael has led strategy engagements across the healthcare space.
Michael received his master’s in business administration from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He, his wife, Esther, and their three sons live in Naperville, Illinois.
Gary B. Byram, Ph.D – Partner
Gary Byram has worked across multiple sectors of healthcare over his career including medical devices, pharmaceuticals, providers and medical technology on a variety of strategy, reengineering and new product development assignments. With Oliver Wyman, Gary focuses on the rapidly evolving role of technology in helping to transform the delivery and management of healthcare which has included working with providers and device companies as well as payers. Prior to joining Oliver Wyman (formerly ChapterHouse), he also was one of the founders of MedTG, a startup bioengineering and medical device company. His other activities include participating in advisory roles for startups as well as acting as an Adjunct Professor with Harding University and with DePaul University’s Kellstadt Graduate School of Business focusing on strategy and management of services companies.
Previously, Dr. Byram was a strategy partner with Accenture in their Communications and High Tech Strategy Practice.
He focused on both the repositioning of incumbent communications companies as well as the launch and development of new companies.This included strategy and large scale change planning around merger/acquisition integration, technology strategy, and enterprise transformation work.
Dr. Byram also has significant international experience in marketing and strategy across multiple industries. As Chief Marketing and Customer Officer for Transora, a collaborative commerce service provider, he had responsibility for US and International marketing, sales, and service. While with AT&T/NCR, including responsibility as Vice President in Corporate Marketing and Strategic Planning, he was responsible for global business and marketing strategy, global marketing research and competitive analysis, design and development of new products, reengineering, and M&A activity. Gary also served as Vice President of the New Product Forecasting Division for IRI, and VP of Worldwide Marketing Research and Consulting Services at NFO/AGB. He has been a guest lecturer on marketing, strategic marketing research, advanced statistical techniques, new product development, global strategy development, and scenario planning for companies, universities, and associations, i.e. the American Marketing Association.
Dr. Byram holds a PhD in Social & Organizational Psychology from the University of Chicago.
Mindy S. Kairey – Managing Partner
Mindy Kairey is a Partner of Oliver Wyman (formerly ChapterHouse), a strategy and organization consulting firm specializing in the healthcare industry. Mindy has worked in major segments of healthcare from payers to hospitals and employers to employees. Her work has focused on strategy formulation, product/service innovation, and portfolio analysis and growth for Board and Executive levels of large, well-positioned organizations.
Mindy has 20+ years experience in the healthcare industry and most recently spent fifteen years with Hewitt A
ssociates. During her tenure with Hewitt, Mindy gained notable distinctions in her work establishing leading edge solutions for employers and employees in ways that outpaced the market.
She consulted with Fortune 1000 employers on the creation and implementation of total healthcare benefits strategies. Mindy was instrumental in helping to create a variety of innovative health management solutions for Hewitt clients, such as the Hewitt Health Value Initiative (now an industry standard for measuring health plan performance), Hewitt Health Resource (a B2B web application for Hewitt to interface with all health plans throughout the U.S. on behalf of mutual clients), and decision-support tools for employees to make effective healthcare choices.
Mindy was most recently Hewitt’s Global Practice Leader for its Health & Welfare Outsourcing Business and had responsibility for establishing and executing the strategic direction of the business. In that capacity, Mindy spent considerable time in the market meeting with clients as well as other industry leaders to further progress the business. In her role, Mindy was accountable for maximizing operational efficiency and efficacy.
Mindy’s great strengths include her ability to listen, understand and create solutions to some of the most complex healthcare challenges clients face. She works tirelessly to ensure that clients receive solutions tailored to their unique situation. Mindy also leads client advisory groups to inform the broader healthcare agenda.
Mindy earned a Master of Public Health and Master of Science in Gerontology from the University of Southern California and holds her Bachelor of Science for Pennsylvania State University. She has served as a National Fellow at the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
James Fields –Associate Partner
Jim Fields is an Associate Partner with Oliver Wyman Health & Life Sciences specializing in the Seniors market, segment entry strategies, growth campaigns and segmentation. He has worked
with large payers, healthcare technology companies, and health delivery systems. In addition, Jim has developed expertise on Health Management as well as Federal and State Government programs.
A sample of the engagements Jim has conducted at Oliver Wyman (formerly ChapterHouse) include: building and implementing a Seniors market strategy with a state-based Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, creating a Care Management strategy with a leading health plan, developing segment entry plans with a leading healthcare technology company, building local market development plans for a national health insurer, and developing the national Medicare Part D entry strategy for a managed care company. Jim has also been involved with the creation of a long-range strategic plan for a multi-hospital system, producing channel development plans for a major health insurance carrier, and leading a market assessment of the Taft Hartley segment.
Prior to joining Oliver Wyman in 2002, Jim honed his experience in private equity and business consulting with a big five firm.
Jim received his MBA from the Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg School of Management and holds an undergraduate degree from Ball State University. He serves on the Board of Evaluators for Ball State University’s nationally ranked Entrepreneurship Program.

Todd Van Tol – Associate Partner
Todd Van Tol, a Principal at ChapterHouse, is a strategy and business development consultant with a strong track record of partnering with senior leaders in the healthcare space. He has particular expertise and passion regarding the development and implementation of growth strategies, customer analysis and experience design,
, and helping organizations assess their strategic options in an increasingly complex and turbulent healthcare market.
During his time at Oliver Wyman, Todd has worked across the health insurance and management space on a variety of topics including Medicare Advantage market assessment and entry, customer experience design, portfolio analysis, new business models for the Small Group market, product innovation/design, and corporate strategy transformation. His experience has spanned all market segments (National Accounts, Middle Market, Small Group, Individual, Seniors) and has focused on helping clients grow their top line and margin performance.
Prior to joining Oliver Wyman, Todd led multiple strategic and business development initiatives within the Blues as a senior manager with the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. In that role, he worked with senior Plan executives on a variety of strategic topics including consumer health and wellness tools, Medicare, health informatics, brand management, and national account strategy.
Todd previously was a Project Leader with Bain & Company, a global strategy consulting firm. At Bain, he led consultant teams on C-level growth strategy and cost management projects in multiple industries including retail, telecom, automotive, consumer packaging, travel, and information technology. Todd also has technical sales and marketing experience with The Dow Chemical Company.
Todd graduated with honors from the Masters in Business Administration program at the University of Michigan and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University.
Jason Grau, Ph.D – Associate Partner
Jason is an Associate Partner on the Strategy
Consulting Team.
Jason has more than nine years of strategy consulting expertise through his experiences with Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and The Boston Consulting Group. For the past five years, Jason has focused exclusively on developing innovative strategies for transforming the healthcare industry.
Jason has extensive experience working with senior (C-level) executives and boards of directors to develop enterprise strategy recommendations. His strategy work has covered a broad range of growth strategies–including evaluation of new market segments, new product development, transformational distribution strategies, acquisition analysis, and pricing strategy. He specializes in applying data-driven management techniques to strategy evaluation.
Jason holds BS and MS degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from Iowa State University and a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering with a minor in Business Administration from MIT. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed scientific publications and is co-inventor of a process patent.
Dan Shellenbarger – Associate Partner
Dan Shellenbarger recently joined Oliver Wyman (formerly ChapterHouse) as a Principal. In his short time at Oliver Wyman, he has partnered with clients on projects ranging from channel strategy to market analysis to sales force transformation. Prior to joining Oliver Wyman, Dan led major client engagements in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device markets as a senior manager for ZS Associates. In that role, he worked with senior executives on a variety of strategic topics ranging from sales organization design to market entry strategy to payer strategy.
Dan holds his Masters in Business Administration from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, and received his Bachelor of Business Administration with highest honors from the University of Michigan Business School.
Richard Weil, Ph.D. – Associate Partner
Rick Weil, Ph.D., is an Associate Partner with Oliver Wyman (formerly ChapterHouse), a strategy and organization consulting firm
specializing in the healthcare industry.
Rick has experience working with hospitals, payers, and medical technology companies. His work focused on developing and implementing go-to-market strategies—including segmentation, targeting, and positioning—sales territory management, operational effectiveness, and strategic planning.
Rick is passionate about bringing real, positive change to the U.S. Healthcare system resulting in improved access to care and better outcomes through the work he does with his clients.
Rick received his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an undergraduate degree with honors in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Illinois.
John Haley –Associate Partner
John Haley has two decades of professional experience during which he has focused predominantly on customer experience management.
He works with his clients to improve their capabilities in that space through an analytical, structured, and holistic approach (people, process, technology), across coordinated channels. John operates across the breadth of the customer lifecycle: acquiring, converting, servicing, and cross/up-selling, and is experienced in conducting primary research to better understand customers (buyer values, attitudes/behaviors, psychographics, etc) and analyzing the opportunity for revenue, profitability, and customer satisfaction enhancement.
Prior to joining Oliver Wyman (formerly ChapterHouse) John was a Managing Director in Pricewaterhouse-Coopers’ management consulting practice. John was a national lead in the customer centricity practice whose focus was on customer experience management including sales and marketing operations, customer lifecycle development, cross selling and loyalty, and channel management.
John is a graduate of the United States Military Academy: West Point where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and was recognized for excellence in academics and leadership. After serving with distinction as a paratrooper, ranger, and in combat, John left the military and attended the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, graduating with an MBA in Finance and Marketing.
